Description

What are Women+ Community Days?

Our Women+ Community Day events provide the opportunity for women to take a proactive step in serving their communities. Volunteers learn new skills and teach others all while working in a supportive and empowering environment. The atmosphere is collaborative and friendly. Through volunteer experiences and educational programming, Women+ Community Days encourage volunteer participants and financial supporters to challenge stereotypes, fight all forms of inequality, and advocate for themselves and each other.

Women+ Community Day events are designed to create opportunities and safer spaces for communities historically, and oftentimes currently, excluded in the construction industry. These communities include but are not limited to women, particularly women of color, genderqueer and transgender people, trans women, non-binary folks, and cisgender women. We encourage cisgender men to support these communities by becoming allies and registering for other volunteer opportunities.

However, please note that some of the Habitat staff on-site the day of the event may identify as cisgender men. These staff members are aware of the purpose of these community days and agree with the need to center marginalized communities.

Project: Building Furniture

We have partnered with Simpli Home who has generously agreed to donate their ready-to-assemble furniture. Simpli Home's belief is that everyone should be able to afford to acquire the furniture to which they aspire. Their mission goes hand-in-hand with Habitat's value for everyone to have the opportunity for an affordable home. The project for the day will be to assemble and build this furniture for the online store.

No experience is necessary to participate. Volunteers at our Furniture Build Women+ Community Day will work under the guidance of staff. Whether you are learning new skills or simply adding a few to your tool belt, this is a rewarding experience for all involved and improves the community that you share.

What to Know Before Volunteering

  • Please wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and comfortable clothing you do not mind becoming a bit dirty.
  • Tools will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own gloves or screwdriver if you prefer. Many pieces will be built with Allen wrenches, but a screwdriver can be useful at times.

Please note: Women+ Community Days are not community service volunteer opportunities. Please contact volunteer@habitatportlandregion.org to learn more about our available community service volunteer opportunities.
